Solo Phase Check Maneuvers (Cessna 172)
Start All Maneuvers:
1. Level Trimmed Flight
2. 2000 RPM
3. Choose an Altitude and Heading
4. Clear the area (180º turn, S turns)
Slow Flight
Single heading, single altitude (Look out the window)
Entering Slow Flight
1. Power to 1500 RPM
2. Raise nose to maintain altitude
3. For Slow flight with flaps:
Lower 30º flaps when airspeed is inside White Arc,
4. At 55kts, (or stall horn) Add power
without flaps: 1700-1700 RPM
with flaps: 2000 RPM
(Add right rudder with power)
5. Use pitch to control airspeed
Use power to control altitude
Recovery from Slow Flight
1. Full Power (right rudder)
Flaps to 20º
Lower nose to maintain altitude
2. At ~65kts, flaps to 10º
At ~70kts (before end of White Arc), flaps to 0º
Approach to Landing Stall (Power-off stall)
Single heading (unless turning)
Stall plane in landing configuration
Entering Stall
1. Reduce power to 1500 RPM
2. Raise nose to maintain altitude
3. Put in 30º flaps inside white arc
4. Stabilize at 65kts descent
5. With turns
Start a 20º bank turn (<20º if requested)
6. Pull power to idle
7. Transition to stall
Stall Recovery
1. Reduce angle of attack (pitch forward) (right rudder)
Full power
2. Then, pitch up to climb at 55kts
Immediately flaps to 20º
3. Establish climb
4. +300 ft, reduce flaps to 10º
5. +500 ft, flaps to 0º
Power on Stall (Takeoff stall)
Single heading (unless turning)
Stall plane on simulated takeoff
Entering Stall
1. Power to 1500
2. Raise nose to maintain altitude
3. At 65 kts,
Add Full power, pitch up (right rudder)
4. Climb at 65 to 2-3 seconds
5. If turning, enter 20º bank
6. Pitch up to reduce speed ~1kts/sec until stall
Stall Recovery
1. Pitch down
2. Accelerate to Vy (73kts)
3. Climb at Vy
Steep Turns
Constant airspeed, constant altitude, 45º bank turns
1. Begin to turn to 45º Bank (use rudder)
2. At 30º bank, add power (maintain airspeed) and pull back (maintain altitude)
Reduce to neutral rudder in turn.
3. Roll out
Bank to 0º (use rudder)
Reduce power
Pitch forward
Turns Around a Point
Enter circle on downwind (not required)
Altitude +- 100ft
Airspeed +- 10kts
S-turns Around a Road (linear reference)
Road direction should have some cross-wind component
Enter perpendicular to road
Rectangular Pattern
Enter downwind on 45º
